Buffer pricing in 2026: the per-channel math and when an API is cheaper

By Antoine Blanco··6 min read

Buffer bills per channel. One connected social account is one channel, at $5 a month on Essentials or $10 on Team, checked October 16, 2026. Buffer Free covers 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each. Here is the per-channel math at 5, 10 and 30 channels, and where an API gets cheaper.

That meter is the thing to understand before anything else. Later counts social sets of 8 profiles, Metricool counts brands, Hootsuite counts seats and accounts. Buffer counts channels, which makes it the cheapest of the four for one brand on three networks and the most linear as you grow.

Buffer plans and prices, October 16, 2026

Read from the Buffer pricing page today. Prices are per channel, per month.

Plan Price per channel Channels Scheduled posts per channel Users API keys API requests per month Insights history
Buffer Free no charge up to 3 10 1 1 3,000 30 days
Essentials $5 unlimited unlimited, fair use cap 5,000 1 3 7,500 unlimited
Team $10 unlimited unlimited, fair use cap 5,000 unlimited 5 15,000 unlimited

Two details the cards do not make obvious. The 10 scheduled posts on Buffer Free are a queue depth, not a monthly quota: once a post publishes the slot comes back. And "unlimited" on the paid tiers has a published number behind it, a fair use cap of 5,000 posts per channel, which Buffer says nobody has reached.

Annual billing is where the page contradicts itself. The plan cards say "billed yearly (save 2 months)", which is a 16.7% discount. The FAQ further down the same page says annual billing gives "a 20% discount". Those are different numbers on the same page, so get the figure confirmed at checkout rather than from either line.

The real buffer cost, by channel count

Monthly rate, standard pricing, no annual discount applied.

Channels Essentials Team Per channel
1 $5 $10 $5 or $10
3 $15 $30 $5 or $10
5 $25 $50 $5 or $10
10 $50 $100 $5 or $10
30 not published not published lower, by an unstated amount

The first ten channels are simple multiplication. Past that, Buffer's FAQ says "channels 1 to 10 are priced at the standard rate, and any channels above 10 cost less per channel" and gives no figures at all. So a 30-channel quote is somewhere under $150 on Essentials and under $300 on Team, and the only way to learn it is to add the channels and look at the total. For an agency pricing a client roster, that is the one number you need and the one the page will not give you.

Buffer pricing: what each plan adds

The jump from Buffer Free to Essentials buys queue depth and history: unlimited scheduling instead of 10 slots, unlimited Insights history instead of 30 days, custom analytics, reports, UTM parameters, hashtag manager, first comment scheduling, channel groups and custom video covers. The AI Assistant is on every tier, including the no-cost one; what Buffer Free limits is AI reply suggestions, at 5 a week.

The jump from Essentials to Team buys people and process: unlimited team members, approval workflows, custom access and permissions, branded reports. If you work alone, Team adds nothing you will use, and it doubles the bill.

Paid plans come with a 14-day trial. There is no separate seat charge on Team; the per-channel rate is the whole bill.

buffer plans against the other schedulers

Same question, four meters. Prices checked on each vendor's own page on the date shown.

Tool Meter Entry price 5 accounts Checked
Buffer Essentials per channel $5 $25 October 16, 2026
Buffer Team per channel $10 $50 October 16, 2026
Later Starter per social set of 8 $18.75 annual $18.75 October 15, 2026
Metricool Starter per brand $20 annual $25 monthly, up to 5 brands October 14, 2026
PlugKit per connected account $49 for 5 $49 October 16, 2026

For pure scheduling on a handful of channels, Buffer is hard to beat on price: five channels for $25 is less than every alternative in that table. The full grids are in Later pricing and Metricool pricing, and the wider list is in Hootsuite, Buffer, Later, Metricool and Publer alternatives.

When an API is cheaper than buffer pricing 2026

Buffer has an API, and it is included rather than sold separately: 1 key and 3,000 requests a month on Buffer Free, 3 keys and 7,500 on Essentials, 5 keys and 15,000 on Team. For a light integration that is enough and costs you nothing extra. Say that plainly, because most comparison pages pretend the API is a paid add-on.

Three places the math flips:

PlugKit is the per-account version of this: $49 a month for 5 connected accounts, cancel anytime, or $97 for 30, with publishing, inbox, comments, analytics, webhooks and a hosted MCP server included at both tiers. At 30 accounts that is about $3 an account, against an unquoted Buffer figure under $10. Below five channels, Buffer wins on price and it is not close. For the API side generally, the social media API guide compares the official platform APIs with the aggregators.

FAQ

How much does Buffer cost per month?

$5 per channel on Essentials and $10 per channel on Team, checked October 16, 2026. A channel is one connected social account, so five accounts on Essentials is $25 a month. Buffer Free carries up to 3 channels at no charge, with 10 scheduled posts queued per channel.

Is Buffer free?

There is a no-cost tier, capped at 3 channels, 10 queued posts per channel, one user, 30 days of Insights history and 3,000 API requests a month. It includes the AI Assistant and limits AI reply suggestions to 5 a week. Paid plans add a 14-day trial on top.

What is a channel in Buffer?

One social account you connect: a single Instagram profile, a Facebook page, a LinkedIn page or a TikTok account. Buffer's own example is five brands with an Instagram and a Facebook page each, which it counts as 10 channels. You are billed per channel regardless of how many brands or clients they belong to.

Does Buffer get cheaper with more channels?

Yes, above 10. Buffer says channels 1 to 10 are at the standard rate and anything above costs less per channel, but publishes no figures for the discounted band. You see the real rate only after adding the channels, which makes a 20 or 30 channel roster impossible to budget from the pricing page.

Is Buffer cheaper than a social media API?

Up to about ten channels, yes, and its own API is bundled with request caps per plan. Past ten channels, or when the work includes DMs, comments and agent tools rather than scheduling, the per-account platforms get cheaper and more predictable. PlugKit is $49 a month for 5 connected accounts, cancel anytime.
