Hootsuite alternatives in 2026: Buffer, Later, Metricool, Publer and 4 cheaper ways to post
Hootsuite starts at $99 per user per month for 10 accounts. Buffer, Later, Metricool, Publer, Postiz, Zernio, Mixpost and PlugKit all publish to the same networks for less, with different trade-offs: seats, per-channel billing, self-hosting, or an API. Every price below was read on each vendor's own pricing page on September 18, 2026.
The nine tools, priced the same day

Hootsuite alternatives: you are paying for seats
Hootsuite bills per user. Standard is $99 per user per month on annual billing with 10 social accounts, Professional is $199 with unlimited accounts, Advanced is $399. There is no free plan, only a 14-day trial, and trial accounts are capped at 10 to 20 posts per organization per day, depending on plan.
That model makes sense for a team of six people approving each other's posts. It makes no sense for one person with eight accounts: you pay $1,188 a year for a calendar. Every other tool in the table bills by account, channel or brand instead, so a solo operator pays between $5 and $29 a month for the same publishing.
Where Hootsuite still wins: approval workflows from the $399 Advanced plan, deeper social listening on Enterprise, and a support contract someone can shout at. If those three matter, stay.
Buffer alternatives: per channel adds up fast
Buffer's Free plan covers 3 channels and 1 seat. Essentials is $6 per channel per month, or $5 billed yearly, and Team is $12, or $10 billed yearly, with unlimited members and approval workflows. Channels 11 to 25 drop to $4 each.
The arithmetic is the whole story. Eight channels on Essentials is $48 a month, ten is $60, or $40 and $50 billed yearly. At ten channels, Postiz at $39 and Zernio at $48 (the first 2 accounts free, then $6 each) cost less, and PlugKit Pro at $97 covers up to 30 accounts. Buffer stays the best answer at three channels or fewer, where it is free.
Later alternatives: social sets, not accounts
Later prices by social set: Starter is $18.75 a month billed yearly for 1 social set of 8 profiles and 1 user, Growth is $37.50 for 2 sets and 2 users, Scale is $82.50 for 6 sets and 4 users. Those figures include the 25% annual discount shown on the page, so monthly billing is higher.
A social set is generous if your 8 profiles are one brand across 8 networks. It is wasteful if you manage 8 unrelated creators, because each needs its own set. Per-account pricing wins there: 8 separate accounts cost $36 a month on Zernio, because the first 2 are free and accounts 3 to 8 are $6 each. On PlugKit, 8 accounts need Pro at $97, because Creator stops at 5 connected accounts and refuses the 6th.
Metricool alternative: the API is two tiers up
Metricool's Free plan manages 1 brand with 20 scheduled posts a month and 30 days of analytics. Starter runs from €16 a month for 5 brands and €29 for 10, Advanced from €43 for 15 brands to €130 for 50. Those are annual-billing prices; monthly billing is €20, €37, €54 and €172.
The line that matters for anyone building on top: the feature row "Metricool API (Zapier, Make, and MCP)" appears on Advanced and Custom, not on Free or Starter. So the full API with Zapier and Make starts at €43 a month billed yearly (€54 monthly), while the Metricool MCP is listed, with limits, even on Free. Postiz includes the REST API on its $29 Standard plan, Zernio includes API access on every account, and PlugKit's MCP server is on both plans. If you only want the calendar and the analytics, Metricool at €16 a month billed yearly is hard to beat.
Publer alternative: hard to beat on price per account
Publer's Free plan gives 1 user, 1 workspace, 3 social accounts excluding X, 10 scheduled posts per account and 24 hours of post history. Professional starts at $5 a month with 1 social account, Business at $10, yearly billing takes 20% off, and every 10th social account or member is free.
Its entry price is the lowest paid price in this table, tied with one Buffer channel. Publer also has a REST API, but only from the Business plan up. What you do not get is a hosted MCP server or comment-to-DM automation, so it is the right pick when a human is doing the posting and the budget is the constraint. My longer list of schedulers by family is in Instagram automation tools.
What changes if an AI agent does the posting
A scheduler assumes a human opens a calendar. An agent needs an endpoint. Six of these nine expose one:
| Tool | Programmatic access | Where it starts |
|---|---|---|
| Postiz | REST API on every paid plan, MCP server included with the account | $29 / month, self-host for free |
| Metricool | MCP with limits on Free, full API on Advanced | €43 / month billed yearly for the API |
| Zernio | API on every account | Free for the first 2 accounts |
| Publer | REST API | $10 / month (Business) |
| Mixpost | API, MCP and webhooks on the Pro licence | $299 one-time, self-hosted |
| PlugKit | Hosted MCP plus REST | $29 / month |
PlugKit is the one I build, so read this with that in mind: it is an API and a hosted MCP server first, and a dashboard second. One endpoint, https://api.plugkit.co/mcp, added with claude mcp add -t http plugkit https://api.plugkit.co/mcp, hands an agent over 100 tools across publishing, inbox, comments, analytics, automations and connections, on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, X, WhatsApp and Telegram. X calls are passed through at X's own rate with no markup: $0.005 a read, $0.015 a publish, and $0.200 for a post that contains a link. There is no free tier and no team approval workflow, so if you need six people signing off on a post, Hootsuite Advanced or Buffer Team is the better tool.
Whatever you pick, the platform limits are the same underneath. Instagram allows 100 API-published posts per account in a rolling 24 hours, per the Instagram content publishing docs, and no scheduler raises that ceiling. The per-network numbers are collected in the social media API guide.
Which one I would pick
- 3 channels, no budget: Buffer Free, or Publer Free if you do not need X.
- One brand, 8 networks, human posting: Later Starter at $18.75, or Metricool at €16 for the analytics.
- 10 or more accounts, human posting: Zernio's $6 per account, then $3 from the 11th, or Postiz at $39 for 10.
- You want to own the server: Mixpost Pro at $299 once for one domain, plus your hosting bill. The licence is perpetual, but free updates stop after a year unless you renew.
- A team with approvals and listening: Hootsuite Advanced, at $399 per seat per month billed yearly.
- An agent that publishes, reads the inbox and replies: PlugKit at $29 a month for 5 connected accounts, cancel anytime.
Two deeper comparisons if you are on the API side: Zernio alternative for the account-count crossover, and Post Bridge, Upload-Post, Late, Mixpost and Bundle.social for the API-only vendors that never show up in scheduler roundups.
FAQ
What is the cheapest Hootsuite alternative?
For paid plans it is a tie at $5 a month for one account: Publer Professional, and one Buffer Essentials channel billed yearly, checked on September 18, 2026. If free is the target, Buffer Free covers 3 channels and Publer Free covers 3 accounts without X. Zernio's first 2 accounts are free with API access included.
Is Buffer cheaper than Hootsuite?
Yes, until you connect many channels. Buffer Essentials is $6 per channel per month ($5 billed yearly) against Hootsuite Standard at $99 per user per month billed yearly for 10 accounts, so Buffer costs less up to 19 channels on monthly billing and up to 24 when billed yearly. Above that, per-account tools like Zernio or PlugKit Pro at $97 for 30 accounts land lower.
Which of these has an API an AI agent can call?
Postiz (REST API from $29, plus an MCP server), Metricool (MCP with limits on Free, full API on Advanced from €43), Zernio (API on every account), Publer (REST API on Business, from $10), Mixpost (API and MCP on the $299 Pro licence) and PlugKit (hosted MCP plus REST, from $29). Buffer includes a basic API on every plan and Hootsuite sells MCP connectors on Enterprise, but both are built around a dashboard. Later lists no API on its pricing page. The full MCP list is in social media MCP servers compared.
Can I schedule Instagram posts without any of these tools?
Yes, by calling the Instagram API yourself with a professional account and your own Meta app. For your own account, standard access is enough; App Review only comes in when you publish for other people's accounts. You get the same 100 posts per 24 hours limit and you maintain the OAuth flow, token refresh and media upload yourself. Tools exist to skip that work, not to lift the limit.
Do I lose my scheduled posts when I switch tools?
Usually yes. Most hosted tools keep the queue in their own database, so it rarely transfers. Self-hosted Mixpost and Postiz are the exception, since the database is yours. Export your calendar as CSV where the tool allows it, and keep the old plan running for one billing cycle while the queue drains.
