Zernio alternative: PlugKit vs Zernio on pricing, MCP and comment-to-DM

If you connect fewer than 27 social accounts, Zernio has lower account charges than PlugKit, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. PlugKit is lower from 27 to 121 accounts; the two match at 122. Account count matters, but it does not decide the whole comparison. The rest is about what your agent actually does with the accounts: publish only, or publish, read and reply. Every price below was checked on September 7, 2026.

What Zernio is in September 2026

Zernio is the product formerly known as Late. Its old domain still 301-redirects: getlate.dev/pricing redirects to zernio.com/pricing. It is a social media API and suite covering social networks including X, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest and Reddit, with a unified inbox, analytics, webhooks, ad management across several ad networks, and phone numbers for SMS and calls.

PlugKit is narrower on purpose: eight platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, X, WhatsApp, Telegram), one API and one hosted MCP server, with publishing, the inbox, comments, analytics, webhooks and comment-to-DM automations included in the plan.

So the honest framing is not "which is better". It is "which networks and operations do you need, and what will they cost at your account count and usage".

Zernio pricing: the exact bands

Zernio killed its plan tiers and bills per connected account, graduated, so each account is charged at its own band rate. From the Zernio pricing docs, checked September 7, 2026:

On top of that meter: from October 1, 2026, the first ten thousand outbound messages each month cost nothing, then $1 per ten thousand; X DMs and SMS are excluded from that meter. The first 500 active managed ads are included, then $0.01 per active ad per month. Phone numbers run $3 to $30 a month. X calls are passed through at X's own rate with no markup: $0.005 a read, $0.010 a DM read, $0.015 a post or DM, $0.200 for a post containing a URL.

PlugKit's grid, checked on plugkit.co the same day: $29 a month for 5 connected accounts on Creator, or $97 a month for 30 on Pro, with Pro extras at $3 for accounts 31 to 100 and $1.50 beyond that. X is billed separately here too: $0.005 per post read, $0.015 per publish, or $0.200 for a post containing a URL. See the billing details.

The first switching point is 27 accounts

Same account count for the full month, excluding usage and other services:

Read that table honestly. Two accounts on Zernio cost nothing, five cost $18, and PlugKit has no answer to that: our plan is $29 a month. The gap closes because Zernio's third band starts at $3 an account, which matches PlugKit's price for extras up to account 100, while PlugKit's first 30 are bundled. Beyond 100, Zernio's $1 rate is lower than PlugKit's $1.50 rate, closing the gap at 122 accounts.

The other half of the bill is usage. Reading the inbox does not itself create outbound messages or managed ads. The upcoming message meter depends on sends, the ad meter on active managed ads, and X calls are separate. Run your own numbers before switching for $2 a month.

MCP: 496 tools versus 77

Both ship a hosted MCP server: Zernio and PlugKit. The difference is the shape of the tool surface.

496 tools cover the Zernio API, which is the point: ads, phone numbers, SMS and social platforms. Zernio keeps a core visible and exposes the rest through a discovery tool. That can add a discovery step outside the core; it is not a performance benchmark.

PlugKit lists 77 tools in its documentation, with visibility controlled by the OAuth scope. You can grant read-only access before letting an agent publish; API keys have full access instead. For a publishing, inbox and comment-to-DM job, PlugKit's smaller scope is a selling point, not a missing feature. Comment-to-DM: both do it, the meter differs

Zernio auto-DMs people who comment your keyword or send it in a DM. PlugKit does the same through Campaigns. The feature name alone is not a differentiator; compare the triggers, eligibility and run logs.

Where they differ is billing. On PlugKit, comment-triggered Campaigns are inside the plan, as described in the Campaigns guide. Zernio announces outbound-message metering from October 1, 2026: the first ten thousand a month are free, then $1 per ten thousand, excluding X DMs and SMS. Below that allowance there is no extra charge from this meter; above it, forecast sends rather than account count.

Meta's rules apply whichever tool you use: private replies to comments and follow-up conversations have different windows. PlugKit's guide describes one private reply per comment within seven days, with follow-up messaging governed by the user's last message. No vendor can sell you around that.

Six other options before you switch

If you are shopping, do not shop a duopoly. Prices checked September 7, 2026 on each vendor's own site. Buffer's $5 rate uses annual billing; the other recurring entry prices below use monthly billing:

When to stay on Zernio

Stay if you need Pinterest, Reddit, Bluesky, Threads, Google Business, Snapchat, Discord or Slack. PlugKit does not have them today and I am not going to sell you a roadmap. Stay if ads are part of the job: Zernio manages campaigns across several ad networks and PlugKit only touches Meta ads. Stay if you need phone numbers, SMS or voice. Stay if you run two accounts, because $0 beats $29.

Consider switching if PlugKit covers your workflow and its account pricing works for you: it is lower from 27 to 121 accounts before usage. Scoped OAuth can also be useful if you want to start with read-only access. Both products support agents, so compare the operations you need rather than choosing by tool count alone.

How the switch actually goes

Plan to reconnect accounts through the new tool's authorization flow rather than copying tokens. Check the import options for scheduled posts; where no import is available, drain the old queue or re-create it. Keep the old setup available until you have verified the replacement, and disable overlapping schedules and automations before cancelling.

The API shapes differ, so code calling Zernio directly will need adaptation and testing. For a small setup, a few minutes per account, an afternoon of API work and a week of overlap are starting planning assumptions, not measured migration times. Adjust them after checking your queue and integrations. Both vendor and platform rate limits can apply; the platform limits are listed per network in the rate limits table. There are free options, but they are not like-for-like replacements. bundle.social has a $0 plan capped at 3 accounts and 20 posts a month, Buffer has a $0 plan for 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each, and Mixpost Lite is free if you self-host it. Zernio itself gives you two connected accounts at no cost, so staying can make sense for a small setup. PlugKit costs $29 a month for 5 connected accounts, cancel anytime.

How much does Zernio cost per month?

The base charge depends on how many accounts you connect. The first two cost nothing, accounts 3 to 10 are $6 each, accounts 11 to 100 are $3 each, and beyond 100 they are $1 each, each account billed at its own band. Ten accounts is $48, twenty is $78, fifty is $168. X API calls, managed ads past 500 and phone numbers are metered on top. Outbound-message metering starts October 1, 2026, after the first ten thousand messages a month, excluding X DMs and SMS.

Does Zernio have an MCP server?

Yes, at https://mcp.zernio.com/mcp, with 496 tools of which roughly 50 stay visible and the rest are found through a search_tools call. You authenticate with OAuth using your Zernio account or with an API key in an Authorization header. Can I move my scheduled posts from Zernio to PlugKit?

Check the export and import options before assuming the queue transfers. Plan to reconnect accounts, re-create items where needed, and keep the old setup available until pending posts and duplicate triggers are accounted for.

Which one is better for an AI agent?

Both expose hosted MCP, so the answer is about the job. Take Zernio if the agent needs its broader mix of social, ads or phone services.
